Zimbabwe vs Afghanistan (4th ODI) Tue, 05 Jan 2016 10:39:46 +0000 The 4th odi between Zimbabwe and Afghanistan was played at Sharjah cricket stadium. Afghanistan was already leading the side with 2-1. This was a must win match for Zimbabwe as losing the match could cost them series lost. After winning the 3rd match the Zimbabwe team was quite confident of winning this match and to level the series. The match started of with when Zimbabwe captain Elton Chigumbura won the toss and decided to bat first on a batting friendly track of Sharjah.

Zimbabwe vs Afghanistan

Zimbabwe vs Afghanistan

Zimbabwe Batting

Zimbabwe openers came to bat in a confident way and they started their innings quite brilliantly. The opening stand between the 2 openers was quite convincing. Both the openers scored 50s with Peter Moor’s 52 and Chamu Chibhabha’s 53 Zimbabwe had a brilliant 92 runs opening stand until the leg break bowler Rashid Khan dismissed Peter Moor lofting the bowl at long off and caught by Dawlat Zardan. After that all the middle order batsman played slowly and sensibly and with small partnerships tried to put a decent total for the hosts. The lower middle order couldn’t impressed a lot and after a very decent start Zimbabwe ended with 226 all out in the last over of their innings. Dawlat Zadran and Rashid Khan took 3 wickets each and Amir Hamza and Mirwais Ashraf took 2 wickets each. Now Afghanistan had to chase 227 in the 50 overs to wrap up the match and the series.

Afghanistan Batting

The afghan start was not as much convincing as their opener couldn’t took the pressure of chase in Sharjah. They lost Noor Ali Zadran in the first over leaving the hosts at 4-1 then wicket of afghan captain Asghar Stanikzai on the score of 13 totally put the hosts under pressure. The hero of the 2nd odi Muhammad Shehzad was still there and was the only concern for the Zimbabwean team. But Afghans had a bigger problem as none of the batsman could stay at the crease to help Shehzad and continuous falling of wicket sent Afghanistan far away from the match. Only Shehzad was the batsman who scored some runs for the team but all in vain as the host all out on 161 runs in 45 overs and tasted a humiliating defeat of 65 runs. Once again Chamu Chibhabha was the man who destroyed the afghan batting and took 4 wickets by just giving 25 runs.

Match Result

Zimbabwe won the match quite convincingly by 65 runs. Chamu Chibhabha was awarded man of the match for his brilliant 50 and his 4 wickets for the team. Now the series is level 2-2 and all is set for the Wednesday for the last and final odi and the winner will not only get the match but also get the series. Shaharyar Khan says PCB to Consult PM on India Series Tue, 24 Nov 2015 06:16:57 +0000 Shaharyar Khan

Shaharyar Khan

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Shaharyar Khan said that he would take Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif into confidence about a proposed cricket series with arch-rival India.

“There is no possibility of meeting Prime Minister Sharif at the moment as he is going abroad for a conference. But I will brief him about the development,” Khan told media persons in Lahore.

About his meeting with BCCI Chairman Shashank Manohar in Dubai yesterday, he said that two sides had fruitful talks.

“ECB Chairman Giles Clarke facilitated the meeting and welcomed us at the ICC headquarters. It was mutually agreed that both PCB and BCCI will not comment on the matter,” he said.

Giles Clarke will give a briefing about the series, he added.

To a question, Shaharyar said that he was proud to see the improved ground fielding of the national side in the one-day series against England.

“Winning or losing is part of the game. But our players played with a lot of passion in the last one dayer. 350 was a big score.”

Responding to a question about Sartaj Aziz statement that India was not willing to at a neutral venue, Khan said that that “this was our series.”

The PCB chief welcomed the statement of Sri Lanka Cricket Board (PCB) about hosting the series, but he said that it was too early to comment any further.

Misbah Warns England of Yasir Threat (Cricket) Fri, 09 Oct 2015 07:48:40 +0000 Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq Thursday warned England that fast-rising leg spinner Yasir Shah posed a “threat to every team” ahead of their three-Test series but said his batsmen would have to be at their best against quality opposition bowling.

Pakistan hope Shah and slow left armer Zulfiqar Babar will be able to match the exploits of Saeed Ajmal and? Abdul Rehman who shared 43 wickets between them in a 3-0 rout of England in 2012.

Asked whether Shah would be an equal threat in the absence of Ajmal, who is not selected for the series due to lack of form after remodelling his action, Misbah said: “The way he’s bowling he’s a threat to every team.

“Obviously England know that and he too is aware of it. But it’s not just him but all our bowlers have to play their roles and the batsmen must score consistently well.”

Shah has been leading Pakistan’s spin attack in Ajmal’s abscence, taking 24 wickets in Pakistan’s last series in Sri Lanka and climbing to number three in the Test rankings.

Misbah praised his spinner but hoped his fast bowlers also contribute.

“Yasir has been outstanding in recent times and so has been Babar. But it’s not just them but we expect the fast bowling department also to play their roles by taking wickets with the new ball, especially in Abu Dhabi,” added the skipper, 41.

And he said his batsmen would also need to counter England’s new spin twins Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid.

“Ali has been bowling really well, and he has done well against a team like India, that says a lot of his bowling strength,” said Misbah of Ali, who took 19 wickets in England’s 3-1 home win against India last year.

“Again it’s not just the two spinners we have to respect but the others too. We need to deal with their seamers as well. They have some quality fast bowling.”

England’s pacers include world numbers two and five Stuard Broad and James Anderson, and are far stronger on paper than Pakistan’s which features Wahab Riaz and Junaid Khan.

He also hoped the return of Shoaib Malik — back after five years — would boost the team and give them an extra bowling option.

“He’s playing really well and is in good form. He is here for his bowling as well and will be very useful for us because England have four to five left handers.”

Asif Shines as Pakistan Clinch ODI Series Tue, 06 Oct 2015 08:25:20 +0000 Bilal Asif

Bilal Asif

Offspinner Bilal Asif outlined his potential value to Pakistan ahead of upcoming games against England as his five-wicket haul clinched the third and decisive one-day international against Zimbabwe at Harare Sports Club on Monday.

Playing in just his second ODI, Asif decimated the Zimbabwe line-up with figures of 5 for 25 as the hosts were bowled out for 161, then scored 38 as Pakistan chased their target in 34 overs to win by seven wickets.

The 30-year-old was a late addition to Pakistan’s ODI squad at the behest of Test captain Misbah-ul-Haq, who felt the offspinner could come in handy against England’s slew of left-handers in a three-match series that starts on October 13.

Zimbabwe had made an impressive start after losing the toss and being asked to bat, with openers Chamu Chibhabha and Richmond Mutumbami putting on 89 for the first wicket at a steady pace.

But Asif broke the stand in his fifth over when he had Chibhabha caught and bowled for 48, and then went on to take four further wickets in his last three overs as Zimbabwe sank to 133 for seven.

“The wicket looked very good for batting and at one stage we were looking to keep them within 270, but Bilal Asif bowled exceptionally,” said regular Pakistan captain Azhar Ali, who watched the match from the sidelines because of a foot infection.

“It was only his second game, but he bowled with great maturity. Before this series we had a plan that we wanted to test some new blood and it is very good sign that they have performed and played with confidence. We have achieved our goals from this series.”

Imad Wasim also inflicted damage as he took 3 for 36 on his return to the side, and the only Zimbabwean wicket that did not fall to spin came with fast bowler Mohammad Irfan having Mutumbami caught behind for a career-best 67.

That meant that in the two games Pakistan won during the series, Zimbabwe lost 19 of 20 wickets to spin.

Asif rode his luck as Pakistan began their chase before lunch, enjoying a reprieve at slip from the fourth delivery he faced before taking the tourists into the interval on 29 without loss.

After lunch he became even more aggressive, but the approach caught up with him when he holed out to long-on off the bowling of John Nyumbu.

Asad Shafiq and Shoaib Malik finished off the job with an unbroken stand of 58, ending unbeaten on 38 and 34 respectively.

Pakistan look to Complete Whitewash in Harare Tue, 29 Sep 2015 08:04:27 +0000 Pakistan will take on Zimbabwe in the second T20I on Tuesday with a chance to whitewash the hosts after registering a hard-fought 13-run win in the first match at the Harare Sports Club.

Pakistan vs Zimbabwe

Pakistan vs Zimbabwe

Skipper Shahid Afridi opted to give several youngsters a chance in the opener, preferring Sohaib Maqsood over seasoned all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez and promoting Immad Wasim up the batting order. In addition, Imran Khan Jr made his debut and bowled an impressive final over under pressure, despite going for runs in the first three.

Sohaib failed to fire on his comeback but Immad was electric; grabbing a career-best four-wicket haul, while he also scored a quick-fire 18 with the bat on his way to the man of the match award.

Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif said that Immad could become a good all-rounder in the shorter formats of the game but needs to bat higher up the order. “Immad has shown that he can do well in international cricket, but he needs to be managed properly,” Latif told The Express Tribune. “He has a decent first-class record and I feel he should be utilised somewhere in the top order because his potential can’t be maximised if he bats lower down. His bowling is good as well because he looks to contain the batsmen and forces them to make mistakes.”

On Imran’s debut, Latif said that the bowler will take a bit of time to adjust as he looked nervous in his first international outing but has the potential to toy with the batsmen with his clever varieties for at least seven to eight months before teams start to pick up his slower deliveries.

The former wicketkeeper also added that Pakistan’s problem lies in the high number of dot-balls they play, with the team also unable to utilise the first six overs to good effect; hence putting the middle-order under pressure.

“We aren’t playing the way other teams do in T20Is,” he said. “They go after the bowling in the powerplay, whereas our percentage of dot balls is much higher as compared to other top teams. We definitely need to improve on that aspect if we want to challenge big teams.”

Meanwhile, another former Test cricketer Jalaluddin said that the selectors and the team management should have waited till the World T20 in India next year to unleash Imran as a surprise weapon.

He felt that the standout bowler of the National T20 will lose his effectiveness if he plays a lot before the mega event as teams will start working on him and figure him out. “As soon as Imran does well in three or four matches, all teams will start working out a plan against him and his effectiveness will diminish,” said Jalaluddin. “In my view, he should have been used as the surprise weapon in the World T20 because teams would have gotten less time to work against him and he would have won matches for Pakistan.”

Ahmed Shehzad leads Pakistan to Series win Over Sri Lanka Thu, 23 Jul 2015 06:31:10 +0000 Ahmed Shehzad smashed 95 off 90 balls as Pakistan thrashed below-par Sri Lanka by seven wickets in the fourth one-day match in Colombo on Wednesday to clinch the five-match series.

Ahmed Shehzad

Mohammad Hafeez chipped in with 70 as the tourists surpassed Sri Lanka’s 256-9 in the 41st over at the Premadasa stadium to take a decisive 3-1 lead in the series.

The series win kept Azhar Ali’s Pakistan in contention for a place in the eight-nation Champions Trophy in England in 2017.

Pakistan are two points ahead of the West Indies at number eight in the rankings, but both teams are due to play a tri-series in Zimbabwe next month that will determine the final spot.

Pakistan’s one-day success follows their 2-1 victory over Sri Lanka in the preceding Test series under Misbah-ul Haq’s captaincy.

Sri Lanka are assured of taking part in the Champions Trophy, but their lacklustre display did not do justice to the former world champions.

Shehzad and Azhar put Pakistan on the road to victory with an opening stand of 75 in 11 overs before the skipper was removed by sling-arm fast bowler Lasith Malinga for 33.

Hafeez helped Shehzad build on the fine start by adding 115 for the second wicket, but Sri Lanka hit back to remove both batsmen in the space of 23 runs.

Shehzad fell five runs short of his fourth one-day century when he cut seamer Suranga Lakmal to a diving Kusal Perera at third man. He hit 12 boundaries and a six.

Hafeez was caught behind by Dinesh Chandimal off spinner Milinda Siriwardana to leave Pakistan on 213-3, but Sri Lanka’s recovery came too late.

Shoaib Malik hit a 16-ball 29 and ended the match by lofting Siriwardana over mid-wicket for his fourth six. Sarfraz Ahmed remained unbeaten on 17.

Earlier, Lahiru Thirimanne top-scored with 90 for Sri Lanka after skipper Angelo Mathews won the toss for the first time on Pakistan’s current tour and elected to bat.

The left-hander put on 109 for the second wicket with Tillakaratne Dilshan (50) after Perera had been dismissed by Mohammad Irfan off the second ball of the match.

Thirimanne missed his fifth one-day century when he swept leg-spinner Yasir Shah to deep square-leg, where Shehzad picked up a low catch to make amends for a dropped catch in the bowler’s previous over.

Besides Thirimanne and Dilshan, none of the other top-order batsmen settled in as Mathews fell for 12 and Dinesh Chandimal was dismissed after making 20.

Tailender Malinga smashed 17 off 13 balls at the end to ensure Sri Lanka crossed the 250-run mark.

Irfan finished with three wickets, while fellow seamer Anwar Ali took two.

The fifth match will be played in Hambantota on Sunday.
