Sapphire Retail Limited, Pakistan’s leading fashion-house has introduced environment-friendly, canvas bags. The canvas bags, which are made from 100% leftover fabric, will be available in all Sapphire retail outlets from 7th August, 2019.

The canvas bags are being launched as part of the brand’s Independence Day campaign and will be available to customers on purchase of a Sapphire product for a limited time period. The bags are purposefully designed to carry up to three kilogram in weight so that they can be used for multiple purposes. The campaign is driven towards changing the habit of consuming single-use plastic and paper bags and encouraging customers to re-use these canvas bags in their day-to-day life.

In an official statement issued by the brand, it states the reason behind the campaign and its pertinence in today’s world. “With the current level of environmental degradation and deforestation prevalent in Pakistan, Sapphire as a brand has opted to play its part by tackling waste and replacing paper bags. The canvas bag initiative follows in the steps of the brand’s previous Independence Day campaign which involved the introduction of seed-embedded shopping bags made from cotton waste.? The brand also launched a capsule collection, the proceeds of which went to a massive tree plantation drive. This year’s campaign kicked off during Ramadan when the brand distributed 10,000 canvas bags in “Ramazan Bachat Bazaar” throughout Lahore. All these initiatives, are part of a larger campaign called “little by little” which is geared towards creating awareness about environmental issues and to encourage our customers to make responsible decisions that will ultimately benefit Pakistan.”

The canvas bags are manufactured from leftover fabric which is first collected at Sapphire Textile Mills, then shredded into their basic form before being weaved into the canvas bag.

In the long run, Sapphire plans to make these canvas bags a permanent feature at all their retail outlets, replacing the paper-bags altogether.

Jawani Phir Nahi Ani Hits the Pakistani Box Office Tue, 29 Sep 2015 08:18:39 +0000 Given the drama and controversy that erupted at the Pakistani box office in 2014, this year turned out to be a boring affair. Jawani Phir Nahi Ani (JPNA) singlehandedly eliminated the weak competition and smoothly established its box office supremacy. Only three days into its release, JPNA has broken more than a handful box office records — most notably of the highest Eid collection (in Pakistan) after it surpassed Kick’s year-long record of Rs57.8 million by earning Rs74.5 million.

Jawani Phir Nahi Ani

Jawani Phir Nahi Ani

Even prior to the film’s release, both the distributors and exhibitors had displayed confidence in the movie terming it as the ‘ideal’ Eid release. JPNA seems to have repaid all of their trust as it ended up exceeding the expectations of the film’s producers as well, who had predicted an opening weekend in the range of Rs40 million to Rs50 million.

Having grossed Rs20.7 million on the first day, the distributors reworked their target setting on an even higher benchmark. “We changed the target business to Rs70 million, following the outstanding performance on the opening day,” the chief executive officer of ARY Films, Jerjees Seja, told The Express Tribune.

Satish Anand, CEO of Eveready Pictures, had also touted the film to do well; something which he believed was partly due to the lack of competition. “I had expected the film to do well but I think that it has greatly benefited from the absence of major releases this Eid,” stated Anand.

But Seja believes otherwise, telling how the number of shows was evenly distributed between the movies and noted that other releases, such as Halla Gulla, gained valuable footfall due to their release alongside JPNA.

As it stands, the film has already managed to capture? the audience’s attention and is a sure-shot favourite to surpass Dhoom 3 (Rs24m) and Waar’s (Rs23.4m) box office totals in Pakistan and become the highest grossing film in Pakistan.

Waar, which had the luxury of a nine-day weekend earned Rs95 million, a record which was later broken by Dhoom 3’s Rs123 million opening week tally. JPNA is already breathing down Waar’s record and given how the distributors of the film expect the film to earn between Rs120 million to Rs140 million during the opening week, there is a strong chance that it may usurp Dhoom 3’s record as well. “It depends on the coming few days.

Unlike Eidul Fitr, JPNA does not have the luxury of a four-day weekend and even though the audiences in single screen cinemas may reduce a bit but I expect it to continue its strong performance in multiplexes,” remarked Seja. Where other distributors have termed the film’s success as a byproduct of excellent release timing, exhibitors have pointed out to the film’s comic content as a major selling point.

Although glad at the success of the film, writer Vasay Chaudhry did not take all the credit for it and cited the example of Waar to explain how content does not guarantee a movie’s box-office fate. “Waar was also released on Eid and it was an action film in English but turned out to be a blockbuster,” said Chaudhry.

He went on to praise Asim Raza, the director of the forthcoming Ho Mann Jahaan, for his decision to postpone his film to post-Muharram, a decision that allowed JPNA to complete its run in the three weeks leading up to Muharram. “By releasing multiple local films on Eid the profit is split. That happened with Bin Roye and Wrong No on Eid and then Moor, Shah and Dekh Magar Pyaar Say. We need to allow films to complete their full run.” JPNA has been released on 80 screens whereas Waar, Dhoom 3 and Kick were released on 48, 56 and 58 screens respectively.

Shakiras hit Song Loca Not Plagiarism U.S Judge Rules Tue, 11 Aug 2015 08:20:52 +0000 A case in which pop star Shakira’s 2010 hit single “Loca” was found to be an illegal copy of a Dominican songwriter’s work came crashing down on Monday when a U.S. judge said the songwriter had lied to the court and the cassette tape on which his claims were based is a fake.

“[T]here was a basic issue of fraud in the trial,” said U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein in Manhattan, dismissing the copyright infringement case against Sony/ATV Latin and Sony/ATV Discos.

Last August, Hellerstein ruled that Shakira’s Spanish-language chart topper, and another song by a Dominican rapper known as El Cata, illegally ripped off a recording by Ramon Arias Vasquez called “Loca con su Tiguere.” The judge found the Sony units liable for distributing the infringing songs.

Shakira reached the top of the Latin Billboard charts with “Loca,” reportedly selling more than five million copies worldwide.

New York-based Mayimba Music, which owns the rights to Arias’ work, sued Sony in 2012.

On Monday, Hellerstein said new Sony evidence offered “competent and substantial proof” that the cassette on which Arias allegedly recorded the song, which had been used to register a U.S. copyright, was not made in 1998 as claimed. As a result, he said, the copyright is invalid.

A representative for Mayimba declined to comment on Monday’s ruling. It’s not known if the company will appeal.

Sony’s attorney Barry Slotnick said after the ruling, “we’re very pleased and gratified on behalf of Sony and the real writers, El Cata and Shakira.”

Hellerstein had been set to rule on damages when Sony brought its 11th-hour evidence to the court.

On Monday, the judge said he had lost faith in Arias’ testimony. He noted the photo on the cassette’s cover depicts an adult man named Jhoan Gonzalez. Gonzalez was born in 1989, and would have been only 9 years old if the tape was made, as claimed, in 1998.

Hellerstein also said other songs on the tape belonged to a Dominican band and were written in 2008 and 2009. He said Arias’ song must have been created at the same time.

Mayimba’s attorney James Sheinbaum had earlier suggested the other songs could have been put on the cassette after 1998 possibly by someone other than Arias.

The case is Mayimba Music Inc v. Sony/ATV Latin Music Publishing et al, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, No. 12-cv-1094.

Banking Court Judge Sabir Sultan and the staff left as the working hours of the court ended but the bail orders did not arrive.

On Tuesday. the bail plea of model Ayyan Ali was accepted by a two-member bench of the Lahore High Court on Tuesday ordering release of the model who is accused of currency smuggling.

The counsel of Ayyan Ali, Latif Khosa told the court that the model was arrested before acquiring of the boarding pass hence the allegation of smuggling currency could not be proved as she was not officially a traveller.

Furious 7 Destroys Records with $143.6 Million Debut Mon, 06 Apr 2015 07:23:40 +0000 Furious 7

Furious 7

Furious 7″ raced to the top of the domestic box office, picking up a massive $143.6 million in its opening weekend.

That establishes a new high-water mark for the month of April, blowing past the $95 million debut of “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” and stands as the highest-grossing kick-off for any film in the “Fast and Furious” franchise. It also ranks ninth among the top ten openings in history.

Much as “The Dark Knight” turned into a memorial for Heath Ledger, audiences flocked to see star Paul Walker in one of his final roles. The actor died in a 2013 car crash at the age of 40 and his work on the film was completed using digital technology and a series of stand-ins.

“This is a bittersweet installment in the franchise,” said Phil Contrino, vice president and chief analyst at “[Walker’s] passing made this movie more intriguing for people who hadn’t seen some of the installments. It raised awareness and its success is a tribute to him.”

Universal Pictures spared no expense in bringing the latest chapter in the fast cars and gravity-defying-stunts series to the big screen, shelling out $190 million on the production. It unspooled in 4,003 North American theaters, earning $14 million on 365 Imax screens and $11.5 million from premium large format screens. Going into the weekend, most analysts estimated that the film would open in the $115 million range.

Foreign numbers were steroidal. Internationally, the film rolled out across 10,500 screens in 63 territories, earning $240.4 million.

“This is the next member of the billion dollar club and that’s a rarefied place to be,” said Contrino. “This thing is on fire.”

With an A CinemaScore and strong reviews, “Furious 7” could be one of the few modern blockbusters that hangs on for more than a few weeks. The month of April is lean on blockbuster fare and “Furious 7” won’t get serious competition until “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” debuts on May 1.

The opening weekend crowd was impressively diverse, a testament to a series that has drawn strength from its multi-cultural cast. The audience was 51% male, 44% under age 25, 37% Hispanic, 25% Caucasian, 24% African-American and 10% Asian.

“We’re expanding our audience based on the diversity of interest from different ethnic groups all buying into saga of Dom Toretto and his family,” said Nick Carpou, Universal’s president of domestic distribution, referencing the character played by Vin Diesel.

Last weekend’s box office champion, DreamWorks Animation’s “Home,” showed impressive stamina, falling less than 50%. The animated tale picked up $27.4 million in its sophomore frame, pushing its domestic total to $95.6 million.

In third place, R-rated comedy “Get Hard” earned $12.9 million. The Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart team-up fell 62% from its opening number, bringing its stateside haul to $57 million.

“Cinderella” snagged a fourth place finish, picking up $10.3 million stateside to push its domestic bounty to $167.3 million. Globally, the Disney release is closing in on $400 million.

“The Divergent Series: Insurgent” rounded out the weekend top five, nabbing $10 million and driving the film to $103.4 million domestically.

Among art house releases, Noah Baumbach’s “While We’re Young” expanded from four to 34 theaters, picking up $492,976. The A24 release has earned $791,450 in two weeks.

Radius-TWC’s “It Follows” also continued to expand, moving from 1,218 to 1,655, though its gross dipped 35% to $2.5 million. The critically adored horror film has made $8.5 million since debuting on March 13.

The Weinstein Company was particularly bullish on the reception for “Woman in Gold,” a drama about the fight to recover art stolen by the Nazis. The film picked up $2 million from 258 locations and will expand to between 800 and 1,000 venues this coming weekend.

“The film is definitely poised for a long, long run,” said Erik Lomis, the studio’s distribution chief. “That’s a really solid start.”

Thanks to “Furious 7,” the overall box office reached $218 million, the first time that ticket sales have crossed $200 million over the Easter weekend.

“These huge results jump start momentum for the blockbuster, summer season, suggesting that 2015 is shaping up to be everything (and maybe even more) that the industry has been hoping for,” said Greg Foster, CEO of Imax Entertainment.

In other words, “Furious 7” just dropped the mic.

Harrison Ford Battered but OK After LA Plane Crash Fri, 06 Mar 2015 06:22:40 +0000 Hollywood star Harrison Ford was injured Thursday when the small plane he was flying suffered engine failure and crash-landed on a golf course outside Los Angeles, officials said.

Harrison Ford

Harrison Ford

The 72-year-old “Indiana Jones” and “Star Wars” actor suffered multiple gashes to his head and was left bleeding after the crash of the vintage two-seater plane, according to the TMZ celebrity website.

“At the hospital. Dad is OK. Battered, but OK! He is every bit the man you would think he is. He is an incredibly strong man,” said Ford’s son Ben in a tweet.

“He was banged up and is in the hospital receiving medical care. The injuries sustained are not life threatening, and he is expected to make a full recovery,” added the star’s publicist, Ina Treciokas.

The striking yellow-silver plane — which was left with its nose cone ripped open after the crash — had just taken off from Santa Monica Airport.

In audio with air traffic control, Ford can be heard saying, in an urgent voice: “Engine failure,” before requesting “immediate return” to the airport.

The aircraft clipped trees only yards from houses, and a few hundred yards from the airport runway he was trying to return to, before crashing onto what looked like a fairway.

“I’m sure the pilot was glad that there was a golf course here,” said Patrick Jones of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

A Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman, who did not identify Ford, initially said the pilot was critically injured, but that was later changed to moderately hurt.

“When we arrived on scene we had a small aircraft that was down on Penmar Golf Course, near the Santa Monica Airport,” spokesman Erik Scott told AFP, recounting the early afternoon crash at the golf course in Venice, southwest of Los Angeles.

Another LAFD spokesman, Patrick Butler, speaking at the scene, described the injuries as “fair to moderate.”

“The patient left the scene conscious and breathing,” said Butler.

The KTLA television station cited witnesses as saying Ford was helped out of the plane by bystanders on the golf course, and that he could use his legs.

TV pictures of the aircraft showed that it had gashed a stretch of grass on the golf course before coming to a halt the right way up.

The crash is expected to be investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), said the LAFD spokesman Scott.

– Experienced pilot –

Ford was flying a Ryan PT-22 two-place open cockpit trainer, one of many hundreds manufactured during World War II to train US military pilots.

Built in 1942, with a 160-horsepower radial engine and a top speed of 131 miles per hour, it was retired by the military after the war, and eventually fell into disrepair, according to a 2008 feature in AOPA Pilot magazine.

It was acquired in 1992 by an Illinois design engineer as a restoration project, and went on to win the prize for best antique airplane at Oshkosh, the world’s biggest air show, in 1998.

It went on to be sold to a new owner shortly afterwards, and is currently registered in the name of a Delaware company, according to FAA records.

Ford took his first flying lessons in college, gave up due to lack of money, but got back into it after becoming an established film star. He has been the owner of several planes, from two-seat bush aircraft to corporate jets.

Tom Haines of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), who has flown with Ford, told CNN the actor was “a very skilled pilot and very safety conscious,” describing him as “meticulous.”

Last June, Ford broke his leg on the set of the new “Star Wars” movie at Pinewood Studios outside London. Filming began in May last year on the new episode of the iconic franchise, directed by blockbuster filmmaker J.J. Abrams.

Ford is back as smuggler Han Solo, Mark Hamill will return as Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker and Carrie Fisher, 57, reprises the role of Princess Leia.

The veteran actor remains one of the biggest names in Hollywood, in a glittering career stretching back decades.

As well as the “Star Wars” and “Indiana Jones” movies, he has had a string of movie hits — and misses — from the acclaimed “Witness” and “The Fugitive” to the panned “Hollywood Homicide” and “Random Hearts.”

James Bond Licenced to Eat in Rome Wed, 25 Feb 2015 06:38:16 +0000 Daniel Craig has been taking advantage of new James Bond movie “Spectre” being shot in Rome to sample the local cuisine in between high-speed car chases around the Eternal City.

James Bond

James Bond

The famously super-toned 007 star has reportedly been spotted in a number of the local eateries, whose menus rarely offer much succour to the diet conscious.

The British actor was snapped coming out of one of them, Dal Bolognese, with the button of his jacket apparently under some strain from a well-filled stomach, an image that helped win him praise from the Italian media for his “aBONDant” appetite.

On that occasion, Craig, 46, was joined by “Spectre” co-stars Monica Bellucci and Christoph Waltz for the trip to a Roman institution that specialises in the rich stuffed pasta dishes of Bologna.

Director Sam Mendes is due to spend just over two weeks shooting scenes in the Italian capital, including several in which Bond’s silver Aston Martin DB10 races around at speeds of up to 200 kilometres (125 miles) an hour in pursuit of a villainous character played by Dave Bautista.

The Filipino-American wrestler and actor gets behind the wheel of a red Jaguar C-X75.

It has not all been plain sailing for Mendes, who is directing his second Bond film in what is the 24th instalment of the franchise based on the novels of Ian Fleming.

According to media reports, producers failed to anticipate how noisy it would be driving on Rome’s ancient cobblestones.

As a result, dialogue recorded from inside the Aston Martin as it whizzes past the Colosseum was inaudible and will have to be corrected in post-production.
